Honors Option Course - Astronomical Honors
There are many exciting opportunities designed for students in the Honors Program. One opportunity that is increasing in popularity is the potential to take Honors Option Courses. These courses allow Honors students to receive honors recognition for standard courses by completing extra projects designed by the professor.
Current Astronomy instructor Ralph Pass is new to the Honors Option Courses, but finds it to be a great experience for his students. He explains that, “The participants are highly motivated and very eager to learn and do different things. That helps make the class more enjoyable.” More often than not, a cohort of honors students will be involved in the Honors Option Courses. These groups of students may bring a new dynamic view of topics to the classroom as they sometimes present the findings of their research or projects to the class. Students say that the highlight of Dr. Pass’ Astronomy class would be the chance to explore the night sky using the Mendel Observatory. “In Astronomy, you’ll get to see planets, nebulas, stars, and comets,” current Senior Joseph LaTorre shared. “But they won’t be just pictures. You will actually get the chance to look at Saturn with your very own two eyes!”
The key difference between the normal astronomy class and the Honors Option Course is that the learning is “more in depth and hands on,” says Pass. Honors Option Courses create an experience that Honors Program students are encouraged to take advantage of, especially for those who are in need of a few extra honors credits. The only question that remains is, what new Honors Option Courses will faculty consider next?
