On Saturday, October 24th, Honors Students went to Bread and Roses soup kitchen in Lawrence. Organized by the Service Committee of the Honors Student Council and led by Megan Bouchard ‘17, the group volunteered during the dinner service. The shift began with a tour of the converted schoolhouse which is now home to a full kitchen and dining room that serves nearly two hundred people a night, rooms full of clothing and toy donations, and a pantry in the basement where donations are sorted, dated, and placed on shelves in a grocery-store manner.
After the tour, the Honors Students helped with serving dinner, which consisted of serving cups of soup as an appetizer, making the plates full of shepherd’s pie, serving the meal, passing out dessert, and cleaning the tables. When the meal time was completed, they went to the basement to work on sorting through the pantry and checked the quality of donations by organizing them on shelves. Once this process was finished, they returned to the kitchen to wash dishes, clean counters, and put everything back in place to be ready to go for the next meal on Monday.
The experience at Bread and Roses was unforgettable. The guests were explicitly grateful for the food and company of the volunteers and fellow guests. The environment was friendly and welcoming for all, making the evening enjoyable and memorable. The Honors Service Committee did a wonderful job putting the event together and will be continuing this trend with the Wounded Warrior Project in November.
